Methil Docks

The Skene Group has a ship loading facility at Methil dock where aggregate from Devon Quarry near Kennoway is loaded onto various sizes of ships via a transfer conveyor.

This facility is capable of loading at 400 tonnes per hour ensuring that even the largest vessels entering Methil can be loaded in under12 hours and can thus depart from the dock on the next tide. The vessels range in size from 1200 tonne capacity coasters to larger ships capable of transporting 2700 tonne at a time. These vessels transport the cargo to numerous ports on the south, southeast and northeast coast of England.

The stone aggregate being shipped from Devon Quarry is unique due to its high resistance to polishing which is given as its polished stone value (PSV). Having a PSV of 67 means that this aggregate is suitable for use in the production of special thin wearing surfaces (tarmacadam) which provide improved safety performance with regard to its anti-skid resistance properties and reduced noise and spray characteristics making them suitable for the top surfaces of highly trafficked roads, motorways and airport runways. As a result of this our aggregate is in much demand and is now used all over Britain with much of it ending up in the roads and highways of Greater London and Kent.
